The words salsa, casino, Cuban salsa, linear salsa, On1 and On2 can describe different aspects of a class. Some refer to movement traditions and partner pathways; others refer to timing. Sorting out those labels helps you choose material without assuming every demonstration should look the same. A useful beginner course explains its own context alongside the steps.

What is the difference between Cuban and linear salsa?

Cuban casino commonly uses rotational partner pathways, while linear salsa commonly organises movement around a slot. They also have distinct vocabulary and cultural contexts. Timing labels such as On1 and On2 do not describe the whole difference. Neither should be treated as the only regular or correct salsa.

Do Cuban salsa dancers dance On1 or On2?

Cuban casino is not defined by a single timing label. Classes may teach a tiempo or contratiempo, and the terminology needs context. Ask what break and musical relationship the teacher uses rather than assuming all Cuban dancers use the same count.

Read a salsa class description more carefully

  1. Look for a stated style as well as a timing label. Cuban casino commonly includes rotational partner pathways; linear salsa commonly organises exchanges around a slot. These are introductory descriptions, not rules that account for every movement.
  2. Watch a simple partnered basic and notice the overall pathway. Observe where the dancers travel and how they orient towards each other. Avoid judging the whole tradition from one dramatic social clip.
  3. Ask how the class counts its basic and explains the directional break. Cuban casino teaching can use a tiempo or contratiempo. A label needs the teacher’s actual musical and movement explanation to become practical.
  4. Explore leading and following within the specific vocabulary you are learning. Exchange roles with the same simple task so you can notice preparation and pathway from both perspectives, without importing assumptions from another style.

Learning more than one salsa tradition can broaden your dancing, but each deserves a clear introduction. Keep a note of the style, timing and movement you practised. This makes it easier to return to the right foundation when switching between courses or communities.
