On1 and On2 describe timing choices within salsa. For a beginner, the useful distinction is where the directional break falls and how the particular class organises the basic around it. Either can be a starting point. Choosing a clearly explained course and learning its system consistently is more useful than trying to decide which timing is universally superior.
What is the difference between salsa On1 and On2?
The main distinction is the timing of the directional break: On1 breaks on 1 and 5, while On2 breaks on 2 and 6. Specific foot placements depend on the version taught. Neither timing automatically makes a dancer more musical or more advanced.
Should I learn salsa On1 or On2 first?
Choose good teaching and consider the timing used by the people you want to dance with. Either can be a starting point. Once one system is comfortable, learning the other can broaden your options. Avoid switching between unclear tutorials before you understand which timing each uses.
Compare two timing systems without mixing them
- Choose a clearly labelled demonstration of each timing. Write down the counts of the directional breaks. On1 breaks on 1 and 5; On2 breaks on 2 and 6, with specific step arrangements depending on the version taught.
- Practise one demonstrated basic on its own. Follow the teacher’s foot placements and counts rather than assembling a hybrid from several unrelated videos. Repeat until you can explain what your feet are doing.
- When you try the second system, begin slowly and treat it as its own coordination task. Familiar steps can feel unfamiliar when the timing changes. That feeling does not mean your previous practice was wasted.
- Before dancing with someone, agree which timing you are using. Explore it in each role over separate attempts. If either person is new to that timing, return to the basic before adding more vocabulary.
The timing used in your local community may influence which course you choose first. Musical enjoyment, available teaching and your practice opportunities also matter. RoleRotation Academy can be part of a structured online practice routine as you develop your understanding of the dance.
