How can you practise leading, following and a role change using one familiar bachata combination? Give each perspective a clear task before joining the transitions. In Bachata RoleRotation Combo 12, Felipe y Tiago bring material from a collaboration with Chiara Bachatera into the Academy’s social-dance classes.

What is the focus of Combo 12?

The class includes switching roles mid-dance in socials and practising both leading and following. Use the class recording to study the demonstrated sequence and its role-rotation material. Keep your practice aim connected to understandable communication between two dancers.

Choose a section you can revisit

Identify a short passage with a clear beginning and end. Agree on roles and the detail you want to notice, then repeat a comparable attempt. Use the explanation in the recording when the preparation or next transition needs clarification.

A brief reminder can help you return to the same task later. Note the starting position or the connection you are studying, so you have a clear point of comparison in another session.

Explore leading and following

Revisit the section from the other role in a separate attempt when both people want to. Give the newer perspective enough time. Ask your partner about a concrete moment in the shared task rather than trying to change the whole combination at once.

Practise a within-dance role change

Make the switch an agreed part of the exercise. Study the movement before and after it, then return to familiar material. Keep the pace manageable for both people while you explore how the combination can be led and followed in a social dance.
